This checklist is designed for use while sourcing, shopping, reviewing a product, or interviewing a supplier. It is intentionally stricter than a product-page scan. If any mandatory answer is no, stop the comparison.
- Fit, dimensions, or technical specification meet the intended use.
- Fabric weight and structure suit the task.
- Required stretch, strength, insulation, or weather performance is present.
- Care instructions are realistic for the owner or organization.
- Safety or workplace requirements are met where applicable.
- The price and likely use make sense without relying on a green claim.
Reason for any failure:
Composition check
- Full fiber percentages are stated.
- Lining, fill, membrane, coating, elastic, and trim are identified where relevant.
- The bio-based claim names the component it covers.
- A percentage is supplied for partially bio-based material.
- The method behind that percentage is stated or available.
- Marketing names have been matched to recognized fiber or polymer names.

Feedstock check
- The biological feedstock is named.
- Country or region of origin is provided.
- Farm, forest, collection stream, or supplier tier is identified when the claim depends on it.
- Crop inputs or husbandry issues have been considered.
- Forestry claims include chain-of-custody evidence where relevant.
- A residue or waste claim identifies the former material and collection route.
- Competing uses or land effects are not dismissed without analysis.
Textile Exchange's assessment framework for biosynthetic feedstocks stresses that there is no perfect feedstock and directs attention to land, biodiversity, soil, circularity, and social issues. Use those categories to widen the check beyond fossil substitution.
Conversion check
- The fiber route is identified as natural, manufactured cellulosic, or biosynthetic.
- Major processing stages are listed.
- The facility or supplier responsible for fiber formation is named.
- Energy and water information is available at a useful scope.
- Key chemicals, solvents, or biological processes are described.
- Recovery and emissions-control claims say what is controlled and where.
- Wastewater treatment is addressed where wet processing occurs.
- By-products and waste routes are described.
Write the process in one line:
Fabric and finish check
- Yarn and fabric construction are stated.
- Dyes, prints, coatings, finishes, or treatments relevant to the claim are disclosed.
- Blend components have a stated function.
- The product has no unnecessary finish that conflicts with care or disposal goals.
- Test data apply to the finished fabric or product where possible.
Unknown chemistry should not be described as safe. It should be described as undisclosed or unverified. For materials grown by fermentation or microbes, switch to the biofabricated material checklist.
Performance check
Select only tests relevant to the job.

- Dimensional change after washing
- Colorfastness

- Required protection or barrier performance
For each result, note the test method, conditions, date, and product version. A general fiber brochure should not be recorded as a garment test.
Claim-language check
For every public claim, complete this sentence:
"The claim applies to __________, compares against __________, covers stages __________, and is supported by __________."
Then check:
- "Bio-based" includes a component and percentage.
- "Renewable" identifies the resource and management context.
- "Lower impact" names the baseline and method.
- "Biodegradable" states environment, conditions, time, and residues.
- "Compostable" states home or industrial conditions and product scope.
- "Recyclable" names a process and an accessible acceptance route.
- "Circular" names the loop rather than presenting a future ambition as current practice.
Traceability check
- Evidence connects to the exact fiber, fabric, batch, or product.
- Supplier names and facilities remain consistent across records.
- Certificate numbers can be checked with the issuer where applicable.
- Dates cover the production or sales period.
- Mass-balance or book-and-claim systems are clearly identified if used.
- A company-level target is not presented as product-level proof.
Good traceability is a chain. A list of unrelated certificates is not the same thing.
Care and repair check
- Care instructions match the material and product construction.
- Normal cleaning is available and affordable.
- Heat, agitation, light, or moisture limits are clear.
- Common stains can be treated without damaging the fabric.
- Buttons, zippers, hems, and seams can be accessed for repair.
- Spare parts, warranty, or repair service are documented.
- The owner can store the product without unusual equipment.
Add one likely failure and the repair response:
End-of-use check
- Continued use is considered before material recovery.
- Resale, donation, alteration, or repurposing is realistic for the product.
- A named collector accepts the complete item.
- The collection route is available in the owner's area.
- Blends, finishes, and trims are accepted by that route.
- Compostability claims cover the finished product, not only a base resin or fiber.
- Disposal instructions do not encourage littering or uncontrolled release.
Write the exact route, location, and acceptance date:
Policy and system context
A product can meet a narrow material specification while depending on infrastructure that does not yet exist at scale. Keep current practice separate from a proposed circular system.

Use this broader context after completing the product checks, not as a substitute for them.
Final assessment
Rate the evidence, not the brand. If several routes remain in play, the route-by-route comparison helps order them before this final rating.

Choose one conclusion:
- Proceed. The product fits the use and the material claims have adequate support.
- Proceed with limits. State which evidence remains incomplete.
- Pause. Request named documents or product tests.
- Reject. The product fails a mandatory need or makes a material claim that cannot be supported.
Common questions
Does every box need a check mark?
No. Relevance depends on the product and claim. The mandatory areas are product fitness, accurate composition, support for any claim influencing the decision, and a truthful account of unknowns.
Can I use a company sustainability report as evidence?
Yes, but only for claims it supports at the stated scope. Company-wide information may not prove the composition or processing of one product.
What should I do with confidential supplier data?
Record who reviewed it, its scope, and the conclusion that can be disclosed. Do not imply public verification if readers cannot inspect the evidence.
How often should the checklist be repeated?
Repeat it when the supplier, facility, feedstock, process, product specification, claim, or acceptance route changes. Date every review.
Is missing evidence a reason to reject a product?
It can be when the missing fact is mandatory, safety-related, or central to a claim. Otherwise, report the uncertainty and decide how much confidence the use case requires.
